Crowns
Crowns is a placement puzzle from the Star Battle family. Put one crown in every row, every column and every coloured region, without letting two crowns touch, even at a corner.
The rules
One crown in every row, column and colour. Crowns never touch, not even diagonally.
An example
This was the Crowns for Tuesday, October 6, 2026. See how it’s solved, step by step.
How to solve it
These are the lines of reasoning our step-by-step solutions use most, with a real example of each from a recent puzzle.
- The last free square. Only one cell left in the pink region, so the crown goes here.
- A region confined to a line. The yellow region fits only in column 6, so nothing else there can hold a crown.
- A square that would block a region. A crown here would leave row 4 no room, so cross it out.

Questions
Is there always exactly one solution?
Yes. Every Crowns is checked when it’s made, so it has exactly one solution and can always be solved by reasoning, without guessing.
When does a new Crowns come out?
Every day at midnight UTC, the same moment for everyone. That’s 8 pm Eastern in summer and 7 pm in winter.
Do the puzzles get harder?
They get trickier through the week, so a weekend puzzle takes a little longer than a Monday one.
Can I play past puzzles?
Only today’s Crowns can be played, so everyone’s times compare fairly. Past days have step-by-step solutions in the archive.
Is it free?
Yes. All the daily puzzles are free to play in your browser, with no sign-up needed.
