Halves

Halves is a binary logic puzzle, the kind also known as Takuzu. Fill the grid with circles and triangles so every row and column is half and half, with never three alike in a line. Signs between squares say whether neighbours match.

The rules

Circles and triangles: three of each in every row and column, and never three alike in a line.

An example

This was the Halves for Tuesday, October 6, 2026. See how it’s solved, step by step.

×××===×=

How to solve it

These are the lines of reasoning our step-by-step solutions use most, with a real example of each from a recent puzzle.

  • Two alike, so the ends differ. Two circles side by side, so both ends must be triangles.
  • Counting to three. Row 4 already has three circles, so the rest are triangles.
  • Reading the signs. × means these two differ, so this one is a triangle.
  • Filling a gap. A gap between two triangles must be a circle.

Questions

Is there always exactly one solution?

Yes. Every Halves is checked when it’s made, so it has exactly one solution and can always be solved by reasoning, without guessing.

When does a new Halves come out?

Every day at midnight UTC, the same moment for everyone. That’s 8 pm Eastern in summer and 7 pm in winter.

Do the puzzles get harder?

They get trickier through the week, so a weekend puzzle takes a little longer than a Monday one.

Can I play past puzzles?

Only today’s Halves can be played, so everyone’s times compare fairly. Past days have step-by-step solutions in the archive.

Is it free?

Yes. All the daily puzzles are free to play in your browser, with no sign-up needed.
